Let's begin
Keza's mother cuts a pineapple into 8 equal slices for the family. Keza eats 3 slices. What part of the pineapple did she eat? We cannot answer with a whole number. We need a fraction.
A fraction describes part of a whole that has been cut into equal parts. Keza ate 3 of the 8 equal slices, so she ate 38 (three eighths) of the pineapple.
In 25, the whole bar is cut into 5 equal parts (the denominator), and 2 parts are shaded (the numerator).
A fraction with 1 on top, like 18, is called a unit fraction. 38 is made of three pieces of size 18.
| Fraction | In words |
|---|---|
| 12 | one half |
| 13 | one third |
| 34 | three quarters |
| 25 | two fifths |
| 58 | five eighths |
| 710 | seven tenths |
A fraction is also a number. Cut the space from 0 to 1 into 4 equal jumps and each jump is 14. Two jumps land on 24 and three jumps land on 34.

Tip
D is for Down. The denominator is down at the bottom and tells how many equal parts make the whole. The numerator on top counts the parts you have.
