Netball Tactics
Lesson 1 of 3
22 min
Netball has no dribbling, and a player may hold the ball for less than three seconds. The only way to move the ball up the court is to pass it, so every one of the seven players must be able to get free, catch cleanly and pass accurately. A team that does these simple things quickly will beat a team of taller or faster players who do them slowly.
Figure 1. The netball court: three thirds and two shooting circles. Diagram: Ganzaa.
Each player wears a bib with the letters of their position. Entering an area you are not allowed in is offside, and the other team gets a free pass.
| Bib | Position | Defending circle | Defending third | Centre third | Attacking third | Attacking circle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GS | Goal shooter | ✓ | ✓ | |||
| GA | Goal attack | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ||
| WA | Wing attack | ✓ | ✓ | |||
| C | Centre | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ||
| WD | Wing defence | ✓ | ✓ | |||
| GD | Goal defence | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ||
| GK | Goal keeper | ✓ | ✓ |
Netball is a non-contact game: contact that interferes with an opponent is a penalty. A defender marking the player with the ball must stand at least 0.9 m from that player's landing foot. Closer than that, with arms raised, is obstruction.
| Pass | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Chest pass (two hands) | Short to medium distance; accurate to a moving teammate |
| Shoulder pass (one hand) | Long, fast and direct, over a distance |
| Bounce pass | To get the ball past a tall defender's arms in a tight space |
| Overhead pass | Over a defender's head to a teammate beyond |
| Lob pass | A high, looping pass to a teammate running away from you or into free space |
Ishimwe (WA) catches the ball on the run, landing on her left foot. She pivots on it to face the circle, lifts her left foot to reach for a better angle, then puts it back down while still holding the ball.
Decision. Stepping. She may pivot on her landing foot, or lift it, but must release the ball before it touches the ground again. The other team gets a free pass.
Safety: on outdoor courts, check for loose gravel and wet patches; take short steps to land and turn safely, because netball's sudden stops put strain on the knees and ankles; remove jewellery and keep fingernails short.
Tip
Memory hook: "Land, pivot, pass in three." Land on one foot, pivot on it if you need to, and release within three seconds. For the areas, remember that the letter G means you may go into a circle: GS, GA, GD and GK are the only circle players.
Which positions may enter the defending shooting circle?
Solution. Only GD and GK.
A WA steps into the attacking shooting circle to catch a pass. What is the call?
Solution. Offside. WA may play in the centre and attacking thirds but not in the circle. The other team gets a free pass.
A defender stands 0.5 m from the player with the ball, arms raised. What is the call?
Solution. Obstruction. She must be at least 0.9 m from the landing foot.
Your teammate is 20 m away, running into space with no defender near. Which pass?
Solution. A shoulder pass: it is long, fast and direct.
