Bass Staff and Grand Staff
Lesson 1 of 4
25 min
Let's begin
On Sunday, Niyonzima listens to his father singing in the church choir. His father's voice is deep and low, like a big drum. After the service, Niyonzima peeks at his father's music. The notes sit on a staff with a strange sign at the start: a curl and two dots.
"Why is your music written differently from mine?" he asks.
The treble clef is perfect for high notes: children's and women's voices, the recorder, and the right hand of the piano. But many sounds are much lower: a man's deep voice, a bass guitar, the left hand of the piano. If we wrote those low notes on the treble staff, they would hang far below it on a ladder of ledger lines that is hard to read.
The bass clef solves this problem. It gives the lines and spaces new names, so that low notes sit comfortably on the staff. The word bass is said like "base", and it means low.
The bass clef is also called the F clef. Its round head starts on the fourth line from the bottom, and its two dots sit on either side of that same line: one in the space above it and one in the space below it. Together they point to line 4 and say, "This line is F." It is the F just below middle C.
Once you know that line 4 is F, you can find every other note by stepping up or down one letter at a time, just as you did from the G line of the treble clef in P4.
Check your clef: the big dot and the two small dots must all hug line 4. Draw a row of ten bass clefs for practice. They will get neater every time.
Tip
F clef, F line. The two dots hug line 4, and line 4 is F.

What is another name for the bass clef?
Answer: The F clef.
The two dots of the bass clef sit on either side of which line?
Answer: Line 4, counting from the bottom.
What is the name of the note on that line?
Answer: F (the F just below middle C).
Would a bass singer's part be written in the treble clef or the bass clef? Why?
Answer: The bass clef, because his notes are low.
Why don't we write very low notes on the treble staff?
Answer: They would need many ledger lines below the staff, which are hard to read.
