Understand how a computer system works: its four functions (input, processing, output and storage), how computers developed through five generations, the family of computers from supercomputers to microcomputers, the hardware outside and inside the case, storage devices, the types of software, and how to install software safely and fix common problems.

Computer Navigation

Find your way around a Windows computer: the desktop, icons, taskbar, Start menu and notification area; how to customise them and change settings such as the background, theme, screen saver, resolution, mouse pointer, date, time and keyboard; the parts and types of windows and the common accessories; and how to create, save, open, rename, copy, move, delete and restore files and folders.

Word Processing

Create and edit documents with a word processor: start it and learn its environment; create, save, open and rename documents; select, edit, move and find text; format characters and paragraphs with alignment, indents, spacing, lists, borders, shading and sorting; set margins, orientation, columns and breaks; add headers, footers and page numbers; use styles, comments and tracked changes; and design a school history document.

Network and Internet Fundamentals

Explain what computer networks are and how PAN, LAN, MAN and WAN differ, describe the internet and the web and how to connect to them, read web addresses, search effectively, and use email to send, organise and attach files safely.

Music Sprite Programming

Create and import sprites in Scratch, join event and sound blocks, use a variable as an on/off switch with forever and if, compose tunes and rhythms with drum, note, instrument, tempo and volume blocks, record and edit a clip in Audacity, and build a dancing robot.

Introduction to AI

Explain what artificial intelligence is and how it differs from human intelligence, describe narrow, general and super AI and the history of AI, compare a rule-based chatbot with an AI chatbot, discuss AI applications, impacts and ethics, and explain how machine learning uses training and testing data.
