Analyse how explorers, missionaries, traders, chartered companies and colonial administrators prepared and carried out the colonisation of Africa, the problems they met and the effects of their work, and how the scramble and partition of Africa, sealed at the Berlin Conference and in later border treaties, redrew the continent and Rwanda's own frontiers.

African Response to Colonial Rule

Analyse the range of African responses to colonial rule, from collaboration to armed resistance: why rulers such as Kakungulu and Rwanda's court worked with the colonisers, how the Hehe, the Maji Maji fighters and northern Rwandans under Muhumuza, Rukara, Basebya and Ndungutse resisted, why most resistance failed, and what all these responses achieved.
