Lesson 1 of 5

Let's begin
Keza scored 42 out of 50 in a maths test and 34 out of 40 in English. In which subject did she do better? The totals are different, so the raw scores cannot be compared directly. But if both are written "out of 100", the answer is clear: 84 in maths and 85 in English. Writing a number "out of 100" is what a percentage does, and it is why percentages appear on report cards, price tags, phone bills and tax receipts.
Definition
Percentage: a number of parts per hundred. The symbol means "out of 100", so
Example: . The word comes from the Latin per centum, "for each hundred".
Rule. To write a fraction or a decimal as a percentage, multiply it by . To write a percentage as a decimal, divide by 100; as a fraction, write it over 100 and simplify.
Why. , and multiplying by 1 does not change a number's value, only the way it is written.
| Fraction | Decimal | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
A percentage can be more than 100%: of something is one and a half times it.
Important
"Of" means multiply. Change the percentage to a fraction or a decimal, then multiply by the quantity.
Worked example
Find (a) of 25,000 Frw; (b) of 64 kg; (c) of 2,400 students
(a) Frw.
(b) , so kg.
(c) of 2,400 is 240, so is 720 and is 120. students.
Important
Both quantities must be in the same unit first.
Worked example
(a) Compare Keza's two test scores. (b) Express 45 minutes as a percentage of 2 hours
(a) Maths: . English: . She did slightly better in English.
(b) Same unit: 2 hours = 120 minutes. .
If you know a percentage of a quantity, you can find the whole quantity: find first, then multiply by 100.
Worked example
Ishimwe has used 1.2 GB of his monthly data bundle. His phone says this is of the bundle. How big is the bundle, and how much is left?
is 1.2 GB, so is GB and is GB. The bundle is 3 GB. What is left is : GB.
As one equation: , so .
Warning
A percentage of what? A percentage always refers to a whole. If 30 of 40 students passed, the passes are of the class. But 10 students failed, so the same 30 passes are of the failures. The same number gives two different percentages, depending on the whole. Before you divide, say aloud what the whole is, and put it underneath.
Warning
is not . , half of one per cent. Moving the decimal point by the wrong number of places is the most common slip. Estimate first: of 20,000 Frw must be small, and it is 100 Frw.
Tip
Mental percentages. : divide by 10. : half of . : divide by 100. Build the rest: , and . For 25,000 Frw: Frw.
Math Antics (mathantics): "What Are Percentages?". Watch how a percentage is shown as part of a hundred-square, and how it links to fractions and decimals.
