Collinear Points and Orthogonal Vectors in 2D
Lesson 1 of 3
25 min
A water pipe must run in one straight line from a tank at , through a valve at , to a tap at . On the site plan (1 unit = 10 m) the three points are , and . Before the trench is dug, the plumber wants to be sure that really is on the line through and . A drawing can mislead by a few millimetres; two vectors cannot.
In Senior 2 you wrote vectors as columns, such as , and multiplied a vector by a scalar : . The vector lies along the same line as : the same way if , the opposite way if .
Definition
Two vectors and are collinear (or parallel) if one is a scalar multiple of the other: for some real number . The zero vector is collinear with every vector.
Three or more points are collinear if they lie on one straight line.
Example: , so these two vectors are collinear; they point in opposite directions because .
Important
The determinant test. For and ,
Why. If , then and , so . Conversely, if the determinant is 0 and , put : then and .
Three points. , and are collinear exactly when and are collinear. The two vectors are parallel and share the point , so they lie on one line.
Worked example 1: testing two vectors
Is collinear with (a) ; (b) ?
Solution (a) : collinear. Indeed .
(b) : not collinear.
Worked example 2: the pipe line
Show that , and are collinear, and find the ratio . Is on the same line?
Solution and .
The vectors are collinear and share the point , so , and are collinear: the tap is on the line. Since , .
For : and . is not on the line.
Worked example 3: a missing coordinate
Find so that , and are collinear.
Solution and .
Collinear means , so . Check: and . ✓
Worked example 4: where a line crosses an axis
The line through and crosses the -axis at . Find .
Solution and . Collinear: , so and .
Check: , so is on the line, on the other side of from .
Worked example 5: collinear without coordinates
is the origin, , and . Prove that , and are collinear and find .
Solution and .
So is a multiple of and they share : the points are collinear. , so . The figure shows one case, and , which gives .
Warning
Parallel is not yet collinear. If , the lines and are parallel, but they may be two different lines. Three points are collinear only when the two vectors share a point, such as and .
Mind the order in the determinant: , top of the first times bottom of the second, minus top of the second times bottom of the first.
Tip
Before using the determinant, look at the numbers: if one column is an obvious multiple of the other, such as and , say so. It is quicker and shows the ratio at once.
My Maths Guy: Showing collinear points using vectors. Watch for the two things every proof must state: one vector is a multiple of the other, and they share a point.
Practice
The last two are harder.
