The Rise of African Nationalism
Lesson 3 of 4
25 min
Ghana, the Congo and Algeria all became independent within five years of each other, between 1957 and 1962. Yet their stories could hardly be more different: one negotiated, one rushed, one fought. Studying them side by side shows how much the colonial power, the settlers and the nationalists' own choices mattered.

Why it worked: few settlers, a strong mass party, a British government willing to negotiate, and a rich cocoa economy that seemed able to stand alone.
Why it went wrong: no preparation, a five-month handover, Belgian and mining interests behind secession, and Cold War rivalry that made a nationalist leader a target.
Why it took war: France saw Algeria as French soil, and the settlers had the votes and the guns to block reform. Hundreds of thousands of Algerians died; estimates vary widely.
| Ghana | Congo | Algeria | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colonial power | Britain | Belgium | France |
| Settlers | Very few | Few, but powerful mining companies | About one million |
| Main method | Mass party, strikes, elections | Parties and riots, then sudden negotiation | Armed struggle and diplomacy |
| Independence | 6 March 1957 | 30 June 1960 | 5 July 1962 |
| Immediately after | Stable at first; one-party state by 1964, coup in 1966 | Mutiny, secession, UN intervention, murder of Lumumba | Exodus of settlers; FLN one-party rule |
British Movietone, "Ghana's Independence - 1957" (newsreel, about 1 minute). This is a primary source made for British cinema audiences: watch for the crowds and ceremonies, and ask whose point of view the newsreel takes.
Warning
Keep the two Congos apart. The Belgian Congo (capital Léopoldville, now Kinshasa) became the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The French Congo (capital Brazzaville) became the Republic of the Congo, also in 1960. Name the capital to avoid confusion.
Tip
Three verbs. Ghana negotiated, the Congo was rushed, Algeria fought. Start any comparison from those three words and then explain each with the colonial power, the settlers and the nationalist movement.
Important
Discuss. Was the Congo's crisis after 1960 caused mainly by Belgium, by Congolese leaders, or by the Cold War powers? Rank them and defend your ranking.
