Operations on Linear Transformations in 2D
Lesson 1 of 5
25 min
On a still morning the surface of Lake Kivu works as a mirror. Every point of a cloud or a hill appears below the waterline, on the vertical through the point and exactly as far below the water as the point is above it. The waterline is the mirror line.
In S2 you reflected shapes in the axes and in by counting squares. In the previous unit you wrote those reflections as matrices. This lesson finds the matrix of the reflection in any line through the origin, and with it the properties every reflection shares.

Definition
Reflection in a line: let be a line through . The reflection in sends each point to the point such that is the perpendicular bisector of ; points of stay where they are. is the axis (mirror line) of the reflection.
Example: in the line , goes to : the midpoint is on , and is perpendicular to the direction of the line.
Let be a unit vector along . The foot of the perpendicular from the tip of to is the tip of the projection (the dot product gives the signed length along ). This foot is the midpoint of and its image , so and
In the diagram is , with , and . Then , and . Because the dot product is linear in , so is : every reflection in a line through is a linear transformation.
Important
Theorem (matrix of a reflection). The reflection in the line through that makes an angle with the positive -axis has matrix
Proof. Take in the formula. For : , so . For : , so . These are the columns.
For the line , with , the double-angle formulas and give
| Axis | Matrix | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| -axis | |||
| -axis | |||
The general matrix shows what every reflection in a line through has in common:
Worked example 1: the reflection in
Find the matrix of the reflection in and the image of . Check the answer geometrically.
Solution. With : . Then , so .
Check: the midpoint of is , which is on ; and , so is perpendicular to the axis. Also . ✓
Worked example 2: an axis given by its angle
Find the image of under the reflection in the line through at to the -axis.
Solution. , so and . Geometrically, is at , the axis at , so the image is at , still 2 units from : . ✓
Worked example 3: recognising a reflection
Show that is a reflection and find its axis.
Solution. has the form with and (and ), so it is a reflection; as a check, . Its axis is the set of fixed vectors: gives , so and the axis is . (This is the line of the diagram: sends to .)
Warning
Only lines through the origin give linear reflections. The reflection in sends to , so it is not linear and has no matrix. Also, do not use where the matrix needs : for the axis at the entries are and .
Tip
Three quick tests catch most wrong reflection matrices: the determinant must be , the diagonal entries must add up to , and the two off-diagonal entries must be equal.
Joel Speranza Math: Reflecting in the line y = mx with matrix transformations (about 7 min). Watch how the images of the two basis vectors give the matrix of the reflection.
