My Body and My Senses
Lesson 1 of 3
10 min
Let's begin
Gatete is getting ready for school. His mother calls out, “Wash your face! Comb your hair! Put on your shoes!”
Face. Hair. Feet. Gatete used three parts of his body before he even left the house. Today you will learn the names of your body parts and the job each one does for you.
Put your hand on the top of your head. Feel your hair. Now move your hand down slowly, past your face.
Under your head is your neck. Turn your neck slowly. Your head turns too! Your neck holds your head up all day.
Below your neck are your two shoulders. At the front is your chest. Below your chest is your tummy. Behind you is your back. This middle part of you keeps your heart and your food safe inside.
An arm starts at your shoulder. In the middle of your arm there is a bend. That bend is your elbow.
Try it now: bend your elbow and touch your own shoulder. Well done!
At the end of each arm is a hand. On one hand you have 5 fingers. Count them out loud: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The short fat one is your thumb. Remember — the thumb is a finger too. Do not leave it out!
You have two hands. Each hand has 5 fingers. So 5 + 5 = 10 fingers altogether.
Now stand up. Your two legs carry you everywhere. In the middle of each leg there is a bend. That bend is your knee. When you sit down on a chair, your knees bend.
Be careful not to mix these up. The bend in your arm is the elbow. The bend in your leg is the knee.
At the end of each leg is a foot. Each foot has 5 toes. Two feet, so 10 toes.
Watch Uwase play football at break time. She sees the ball coming with her eyes. She kicks it with her foot. She catches it with her hands. She shouts to Keza with her mouth.
One short game — four body parts, four different jobs. Now you know the rule: every part of your body has a job it helps you do.
Tip
Twos and ones. Some body parts come in twos: two eyes, two ears, two arms, two hands, two legs, two feet. Some come alone: one head, one nose, one mouth, one tummy.
Point at yourself and say it out loud: “Two of these… one of these.” It helps you remember!
Touch each part on your own body as you answer. Try first, then tap Show answer to check.
