Food, Health and My Day
Lesson 3 of 3
13 min
Keza stands up to tell the class about her day.
"I go to school. I wake up. I eat porridge. I sleep."
The whole class laughs. She went to school before she woke up!
Keza is missing some small, powerful words. Today you learn them, and then you will tell your own day — in the right order.
These four words are your friends. They tell people when each thing happened.
First — the very beginning.
Then — the next thing.
After that — the thing that comes after the next thing.
Finally — the very last thing.
Now watch Keza try again, with the order words in place.
First, I wake up at six o'clock. Then I eat porridge. After that, I walk to school. Finally, I sleep at night.
Nobody laughs now. Everybody understands. The words did all the work.
When an order word starts a sentence, put a comma after it. A comma is a tiny tail that says "wait one small moment". It looks like this: ,
First, I wake up.
After that, I sweep the yard.
Finally, I sleep.
Then is the easy one. It needs no comma at all. Just write: Then I eat.
in the morning — when the sun comes up
in the afternoon — after you eat lunch
in the evening — when the sun goes down
at night — when it is dark and you sleep
Careful with one thing. We say in the morning, but at night. Not "in the night". Just remember: at night.
Here is a full story. Read it out loud, slowly.
First, I wake up at six o'clock in the morning. Then I wash my face and brush my teeth. After that, I eat porridge and walk to school with my friend Byiringiro. In the afternoon, I play football at break. In the evening, I help my mother and I do my homework. Finally, at night, I sleep.
Look at what Gatete did well:
Three steps, and your story is finished.
Like this: First, I wake up. Then I fetch water. After that, I go to school. Finally, I sleep.
Four sentences. That is a whole story about you, and you wrote it yourself.
Tip
Think of your day as a little train.
First is the engine at the front. Then and After that are the carriages in the middle. Finally is the very last carriage.
No carriage can ever jump in front of the engine!
Put these four sentences in the right order:
Then I eat porridge. / Finally, I sleep. / First, I wake up. / After that, I go to school.
Which order word tells you about the very last thing you did?
Fill the gap: First, I wake up. ___ I wash my face.
Is this correct? At the morning I fetch water.
Write three sentences about your own day. Use First, Then and Finally.
First, I wake up. Then I eat porridge. After that, I go to school. Finally, I sleep. The order words tell you exactly where each sentence belongs.
Finally. It is the last carriage of the train.
Then I wash my face. First comes at the beginning, so the next one is Then.
No. It should be In the morning I fetch water. We say in the morning. We only say at with night.
Here is one example. Yours will be different, and that is good: First, I wake up and wash my face. Then I walk to school with Umutoni. Finally, I sleep at night. Check your capital letters and your full stops!
