Lesson 1 of 3

Uwase helps her mother sell avocados in the market.
Mother tips the basket out and says, "Count them all for me."
Uwase counts past ten. Past twenty. And she keeps going. How far can you count?
You already know 20. Keep going, one at a time:
21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29.
Now stop. After 29 you do not say "twenty-ten". You say 30, thirty.
Then 31, 32, 33 and on to 39. After 39 comes 40.
The same jump happens every time you reach a nine.
Numbers up to 100 come in families of ten. Each family has its own name:
10 ten 20 twenty 30 thirty 40 forty 50 fifty
60 sixty 70 seventy 80 eighty 90 ninety 100 one hundred
Say them out loud, again and again. When you say only those numbers, you are counting in tens. It is fast, and it takes you to 100 in ten hops.
Mugisha is putting stones in a line. He has 47 already.
He adds one stone: 48. One more: 49.
He is on a nine, so a new family is coming. One more stone: 50.
Then 51, 52, 53. Mugisha is counting on, one stone at a time.
Keza takes beans out of a cup. She had 63.
She says 62, 61, then 60. What comes after 60 when you go down?
Not 50. The next one down is 59.
Going down, every zero is followed by a nine: 60, 59, 58, 57.
Sixty-four is written 64. The sixty part is written first, as a 6. Then the four, as a 4.
Be careful! 64 and 46 use the same two digits, but they are different numbers. Sixty-four is much bigger. Always write the family name first.
Keep counting on: 97, 98, 99... and then 100.
One hundred is the first number you write with three digits: a 1 and two zeros.
Tip
Listen for the nine. When you land on a nine, a brand new family is coming next.
29 goes to 30. 59 goes to 60. 89 goes to 90. 99 goes to 100.
Say your nines slowly and you will never get stuck.
