Mechanics Tools
Lesson 2 of 5
14 min
Let's begin
After the long rainy season, Keza found her grandfather's spanner lying in the garden. It had turned rough and reddish-brown, and it no longer fitted any nut properly.
In another home, a mechanic still uses a spanner he bought thirty years ago, and it looks almost new. The two spanners were made the same way. The difference is how each one was used and cared for.
Maintenance means keeping a tool in good working condition so that it works well, stays safe and lasts a long time. Good mechanics follow five steps after every job.

Rust needs three things together: iron, water and air. Take away one of them and rust cannot form.
So Keza's grandfather's spanner rusted because it lay in wet grass, in the air, for months: iron, water and air all together.
It sounds strange, but a blunt saw, file or machete is more dangerous than a sharp one. A blunt tool needs much more force, and when you push hard, the tool is more likely to slip and cut you. Keeping cutting tools sharp is part of maintenance and part of safety.
Tip
Say it after every job: Clean it, Dry it, Oil it, Store it, Check it.
Five short steps today save you from buying a new tool tomorrow.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Habimana used pliers to loosen a nut. Now no spanner will grip the nut. What went wrong?
Answer: Pliers squash and round off the corners of a nut. He should have used a spanner of the right size.
Why should you oil the hinge of a pair of pliers?
Answer: So that the joint moves smoothly and does not rust and get stuck.
A hammer head wobbles on its handle. Is it safe to use "just once"?
Answer: No. The head could fly off and hit someone. Repair or replace the handle first.
Put these in order: store it, clean it, oil it, dry it.
Answer: Clean it, dry it, oil it, store it.
