Lesson 3 of 5

Let's begin
Every morning at school, the national flag goes up the flagpole. The pupil on duty pulls down on the rope, and the flag rises up to the top of the pole.
How can pulling down make something go up? The answer is a small wheel hidden at the top of the pole.
A wheel and axle is a large wheel fixed to a thinner rod, the axle, so that the two turn together. When you turn the big wheel a long way round, the axle turns a short way round, but with much more force.
At an old well, a windlass uses this idea. A rope is wound round a log (the axle). Turning the long handle (the wheel) round and round slowly winds up the rope and lifts a heavy bucket of water.
Other examples: a screwdriver (the thick handle is the wheel, the thin shaft is the axle), a doorknob, a water tap, a steering wheel, and the pedals and crank of a bicycle.

A pulley is a wheel with a groove round its edge, and a rope runs in the groove.
Worked example
A builder lifts a 40 kg bag of cement with a movable pulley. He needs about the same effort as lifting 20 kg (half), but to raise the bag 1 m he must pull 2 m of rope. Less effort, longer distance: the machine's bargain again.

Tip
Fixed pulley = Flips the direction.
Movable pulley = Makes it lighter, but More rope.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
When you turn a tap to get water, which simple machine are you using?
Answer: A wheel and axle. The handle is the wheel and the spindle it turns is the axle.
Does the fixed pulley on a flagpole make the flag feel lighter?
Answer: No. It only changes the direction of the pull, so you can pull down to raise the flag.
With a movable pulley, how much rope must you pull to lift a load 3 m?
Answer: About 6 m, twice the height.
Why does a screwdriver with a thick handle turn a tight screw more easily than one with a very thin handle?
Answer: The thick handle is a bigger wheel, so the same turn of your hand gives more turning force on the shaft (the axle).
