Let's begin
On the last Saturday of the month it is umuganda. This time Byiringiro's whole village climbed a bare hillside and planted three hundred young trees.
"In ten years," said the village leader, "this hill will be green, and the air here will be cleaner." How can a tree clean the air? And what else can we do?

Afforestation means planting trees where there was no forest before. Reforestation means replanting trees where a forest was cut down. Trees help the air because they:

You can help by speaking out politely: explain the danger to a neighbour who burns plastic, make posters with your school's environment club, and remind your family to open the kitchen window.
Tip
Four things you can do: Plant it. Walk it. Don't burn it. Speak up.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
What is the difference between afforestation and deforestation?
Answer: Afforestation is planting trees where there was no forest. Deforestation is cutting forests down without replanting.
Give two ways a family can make their kitchen less smoky.
Answer: Any two of: use an improved cookstove, cook with gas or biogas, open a window or build a chimney, use dry firewood.
Your neighbour burns plastic rubbish every evening. What could you do?
Answer: Politely explain that the fumes are poisonous, suggest sorting the rubbish for collection or recycling, and ask an adult or the village leader to help if it continues.
