Energy Management
Lesson 5 of 6
15 min
Let's begin
At the start of the month, Mugisha's father buys 5,000 Frw of Cash Power. By day twenty, the meter starts to beep: the units are almost finished!
"Where did all our units go?" he asks. Mugisha and his sister decide to become electricity detectives and find out.
Most homes in Rwanda use a prepaid meter from EUCL, called Cash Power. You pay money at an agent, a bank or by mobile money and receive a token, a 20-digit number that you type into the meter. The meter then shows how many units you have left.
One unit is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). That is the energy used by a 1,000-watt appliance running for 1 hour, or by a 10-watt LED bulb running for 100 hours.
Every appliance has a label showing its power rating in watts (W). The bigger the number, the faster it uses up energy. Some typical ratings:
| Appliance | Typical power |
|---|---|
| LED bulb | 8 to 10 W |
| Old filament bulb | 60 W |
| Television | about 60 to 100 W |
| Fridge | about 100 to 150 W (it switches on and off all day) |
| Electric iron | about 1,000 W |
| Electric kettle | about 2,000 W |
Appliances that make heat, such as kettles, irons and hotplates, use the most electricity.
An 8 W LED bulb gives as much light as a 60 W filament bulb. Suppose each is on for 5 hours a day for 30 days.
Changing just one bulb saves 7.8 units every month.
Saving electricity saves money. It also means less fuel is burned in power stations, and more electricity is left for schools, hospitals and factories.
Electricians use special tools. A tester (a screwdriver with a small light inside) glows when a wire carries electricity. Pliers with plastic-covered handles hold and cut wires. A screwdriver drives screws into sockets and switches. Rubber gloves and rubber-soled boots protect against shocks, because rubber is an insulator: electricity cannot pass through it easily.
Tip
OFF when you leave, LED when you buy, DAYLIGHT when you can
And never mix water and electricity.
Try each one on your own first, then tap Show answer to check.
Which uses energy faster: a 2,000 W kettle or a 9 W LED bulb?
Answer: The 2,000 W kettle, because its power rating is much higher.
A 10 W LED bulb is on for 4 hours a day for 30 days. How many units (kWh) does it use?
Answer: 10 × 4 × 30 = 1,200 watt-hours = 1.2 units.
Give three ways your school could save electricity.
Answer: Any three: switch off lights in empty classrooms, use daylight, use LED bulbs, switch off computers after use, unplug chargers.
Why should you never touch a switch with wet hands?
Answer: Water conducts electricity, so the current could pass through you and give you a shock.
Umutoni leaves her phone charger plugged in all day. What advice would you give her?
Answer: Unplug it when the phone is full; chargers still use a little electricity when left plugged in.
