Regular Polygons and Bearings

Let's begin
In Nyakarambi, in Kirehe District, artists make imigongo: black, white and red panels covered in zigzags, triangles and diamonds. Keza's class looked at some imigongo at school, and their teacher asked one question: how many different flat shapes with straight sides can you find?
Keza counted triangles, squares and diamonds. Mugisha found a shape with six sides. Every one of those shapes has a name, and some of them are special, because they are regular. By the end of this lesson you will know exactly what that word means.
A polygon is a closed, flat shape made only of straight sides. A shape is a polygon when it passes three tests:
The corner where two sides meet is a vertex (plural: vertices). A polygon always has the same number of vertices as sides.
Not polygons: a circle (its edge is curved), the letter C (it is not closed), and a figure of eight drawn with straight lines that cross in the middle.
| Number of sides | Name | Where you might see one |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | triangle | a sambusa, a roof gable |
| 4 | quadrilateral | a page of your exercise book |
| 5 | pentagon | the black patches on some footballs |
| 6 | hexagon | a cell of a honeycomb, a nut on a bicycle |
| 7 | heptagon | |
| 8 | octagon | a STOP road sign |
| 9 | nonagon | |
| 10 | decagon |
A polygon is regular when both of these are true: all its sides are equal, and all its interior angles are equal. One without the other is not enough.
When a polygon is regular we usually say so in its name: a regular pentagon, a regular hexagon, and so on.
Mugisha measures a hexagon. All six sides are 4 cm, and all six angles are 120°.
Keza measures a quadrilateral. All four sides are 5 cm. Its angles are 70°, 110°, 70° and 110°.
Tip
Two keys open the "regular" door: equal sides AND equal angles. If either key is missing, the door stays shut.
For the names, listen to the start of the word: tri = 3, quad = 4, penta = 5, hexa = 6, hepta = 7, octa = 8 (like the 8 arms of an octopus), nona = 9, deca = 10.
