Economic Activities
Lesson 1 of 4
15 min
Let's begin
Uwase's family grows beans and bananas on their hill in Huye. Her uncle picks tea leaves on the green hills of Nyamasheke. Her cousin goes out at night on Lake Kivu to catch small silver fish called isambaza.
Each of them earns a living in a different way. These ways of earning a living are called economic activities.
An economic activity is any work people do to produce goods or provide services, so that they can earn money or get what they need. Farming, fishing, mining, tourism, trade, craft work, building and teaching are all economic activities.
Agriculture means growing crops and keeping animals. It is the most common kind of work in Rwanda. In 2000, about 79 out of every 100 workers in Rwanda worked in farming. By 2020 it was about 50 out of 100, as more people found jobs in services, building and industry (International Labour Organization estimates, shown by Our World in Data).

People catch fish in Rwanda's lakes and rivers, and farm fish such as tilapia in ponds. On Lake Kivu, fishers go out at night and use lamps to attract isambaza, a small sardine-like fish that was brought to Lake Kivu from Lake Tanganyika. Fish gives families protein and income.
Mining means digging valuable minerals out of the ground. Rwanda mines:
Minerals, tea, coffee and tourism are among Rwanda's biggest earners of money from other countries.
Worked example
