Modelling: Flat and Round Things from Clay
Lesson 1 of 5
10 min
Let's begin
Keza puts a plate and an orange on the mat.
She gives each one a small push with her finger.
The orange rolls away under the chair. The plate does not move.
Today you will learn the two words for what just happened.
Some things roll. Some things stay still.
That is the whole test. Push it gently with one finger.
A thing that rolls away is a round form.
A thing that stays where it is has a flat form.
Careful! This one tricks almost everybody.
Look down at a plate. It looks round.
Its shape is a circle. That part is true.
Now push the plate. It slides a little and stops.
So the form of a plate is flat.
Shape is what your eyes see. Form is what the whole thing can do.
Look around you right now.
A plate. A book. The table. The door. A sheet of paper.
Not one of them will roll away. They are all flat forms.
An orange. A football. A smooth stone. An avocado.
Every one of them is curved all the way around.
Give any of them a push and it runs off across the floor.
Step 1 Put the book down on the floor.
Step 2 Push it with one finger.
Step 3 It slides a small way, then stops. It never rolls.
So a book is a flat form.
Pick up one thing. Push it. Then say its name and its form.
The plate: flat. The orange: round. The door: flat.
Say it out loud each time. The word stays in your head that way.
Tip
Push it. If it rolls, it is round
Do not trust your eyes. Trust your finger.
A plate is a circle and it is still flat.
