Singing: Short Songs You Can Sing to Anyone
Lesson 1 of 9
10 min
Let's begin
Ishimwe hears a song on the radio one morning.
He sings it all day long, every word, very loudly.
Then his sister asks him what the song means. Ishimwe goes quiet. He does not know.
Today you will learn a song the right way round.
A song is not just a nice sound.
A song is somebody talking to you.
So ask this first: what is this song about?
A song you understand is a song you remember.
Step 1 Listen to the whole song once. Do not sing yet.
Step 2 Find the new words. Ask a grown-up what each one means.
Step 3 Sing one small piece after somebody. Then the next piece.
Step 4 Join the pieces and sing the whole song on your own.
Worked example
Keza picks a short song she hears at church.
First she listens. She does not open her mouth.
Then she says the first line like talking, not singing.
There is one word she does not know. She asks her mama what it means.
Now she sings that one line. Then she adds the second line.
Four small pieces later, Keza has the whole song.
Careful! If you sing fast and loud straight away, you learn the sounds and you miss the meaning.
You have not finished when you can make the right noises.
You have finished when you can do both of these:
Tip
Meaning first, tune after
Before you sing a line, say it out loud like talking.
If you cannot tell somebody what the line means, you have not learned it yet.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
What is the very first thing you do with a new song?
Answer: listen to the whole song once. Singing comes later.
You meet a word in the song that you have never heard. What do you do?
Answer: ask somebody what it means, then say it out loud yourself.
Should you try to learn a long song all in one go?
Answer: no. Learn one small piece, then the next piece, then join them.
Ishimwe can sing every word but cannot say what the song means. Has he learned it?
Answer: not yet. He has learned the sounds only.
Sing a song you already know to one person at home. Then tell them what it says.
Answer: start your sentence with, this song says that ...
