Lesson 5 of 5
35 min
Let's begin
The school librarian, Madame Mutesi, kept a record of the books borrowed each day for one week. She drew a bar graph and asked the P4 class, "What can you tell me from my graph?"
Put your finger on the top of the bar. Slide it straight across to the scale and read the number. Here each line stands for 2 books.
Now be a data detective! Work in a group:
Tip
Top of the bar, straight across. If the bar stops between two lines, find the number halfway between them.
Work each one in your exercise book first. Then tap Show answer to check.
How many books were borrowed on Friday?
Answer: 10.
How many more books were borrowed on Wednesday than on Thursday?
Answer: 7, because 14 − 7 = 7.
On which two days were the most books borrowed altogether: Monday and Tuesday, or Thursday and Friday?
Answer: Monday and Tuesday: 12 + 8 = 20, but Thursday and Friday: 7 + 10 = 17.
A bar stops halfway between the 10 line and the 12 line. What number does it show?
Answer: 11.
Write one question you could ask your class for your own project.
Answer: Many answers, for example: What is your favourite subject?
