Weather, Flora and Fauna
Lesson 5 of 5
14 min
Every year, Mutesi watches Kwita Izina on television. It is a special ceremony where newborn baby gorillas are given names, just as Rwandan families name a new baby. "Why do we name gorillas?" Mutesi asks. "To show the whole world that we love them and protect them," says her mother.
Fauna means all the animals that live in a place. There are two kinds:
Rwanda protects its wild animals in national parks:
| National park | Some animals that live there |
|---|---|
| Volcanoes (north-west) | Mountain gorillas, golden monkeys |
| Nyungwe (south-west) | Chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, hundreds of kinds of birds |
| Akagera (east) | Lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, rhinos, buffaloes |
| Gishwati-Mukura (west) | Chimpanzees, monkeys, birds |
Rwanda is one of only three countries in the world where mountain gorillas live in the wild. The others are Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
