Lesson 4 of 4
14 min
One morning a message races around Mutesi's class on a borrowed phone: "School is closed tomorrow!" Some pupils cheer. But Mutesi asks the head teacher, who says it is not true. Someone made it up. "Always check before you believe and before you share," says the head teacher.
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Poor network | Build more network towers, especially on hilltops |
| No electricity | Bring electricity to more homes; use solar panels and solar chargers |
| High costs | Share a phone or radio; use cheaper plans and community centres with internet |
| Language barriers | Learn other languages, such as Kinyarwanda, English, French and Kiswahili |
| Cannot read or write | Adult literacy classes; voice messages and radio |
| Fake news | Check with a trusted adult or a trusted news source before you believe or share |
| Strangers online | Never share your address, school, passwords or photos with strangers; stop chatting and tell a trusted adult |
| Cyberbullying | Be kind online; do not reply to bullies; save the messages and tell an adult. You can call the free child helpline 116. |
Tip
THINK before you share. Is it True? Is it Helpful? Is it Inspiring? Is it Necessary? Is it Kind?
