Values in the Bible and Qur'an
Lesson 5 of 5
13 min
During a football game at break, Ishimwe kicks the ball hard and it breaks a classroom window. Nobody saw who kicked it. Ishimwe's heart beats fast. Should he stay quiet? Then he walks to the teacher and says, "It was me. I am sorry. How can I help to fix it?"
Accountability means being ready to answer for what you do, good or bad. An accountable person:
"So then each one of us will give account of himself to God." (Romans 14:12)
"Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap." (Galatians 6:7)
To "sow" is to plant seeds, and to "reap" is to harvest. A farmer who plants beans harvests beans. In the same way, good actions bring good results, and bad actions bring bad results.
"And whoso doeth good an atom's weight will see it then, And whoso doeth ill an atom's weight will see it then." (Qur'an 99:7–8)
An atom is far too small to see. So these verses mean: every deed, even the tiniest, counts. On the Day of Judgement, everyone will see all the good and bad they have done.
Both faiths also teach that God is merciful. When we are truly sorry and change our ways, God forgives.
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)
"Lo! Allah is Relenting, Merciful." (Qur'an 49:12)
"Confess" means to admit that you did wrong. "Relenting" means that Allah turns back to people with forgiveness when they turn back to Him.
Christians and Muslims believe that life does not end at death. Both believe that God will judge every person, and that those who believed and did good will live with God in happiness for ever.
"In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)
"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more." (Revelation 21:4)
"And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) unto those who believe and do good works; that theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow;" (Qur'an 2:25)
"Glad tidings" means good news. Muslims call this paradise Jannah, the Garden.
