Classification of Kingdom Animalia
Lesson 5 of 5
22 min
Let's begin
A tapeworm caught from undercooked meat. Bilharzia caught by wading in a snail-infested marsh. Earthworms loosening the soil under a banana plantation. A slug chewing holes in cabbage leaves. These animals belong to seven different phyla, and some of them affect your health and your family's harvest directly.
Question: Describe how a person catches bilharzia and suggest three ways to prevent it.
Solution: Adult Schistosoma flukes live in a person's blood vessels. Their eggs leave the body in urine or faeces. If these reach a lake, pond or marsh, the eggs hatch, and the larvae enter certain water snails and multiply. The snails release thousands of tiny larvae into the water, which burrow through the skin of anyone who wades, swims, bathes or washes clothes there.
To prevent it: (1) use latrines, so that eggs never reach the water; (2) avoid wading or bathing in still water known to carry the disease, and use safe piped or boiled water; (3) treat infected people with medicine; (4) reduce snail numbers, for example by clearing water weeds.
| Phylum | Symmetry | Body cavity | Gut openings | Remember it by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Porifera | none | none | no gut | pores |
| Cnidaria | radial | none | one | stinging tentacles |
| Platyhelminthes | bilateral | none | one or none | flat |
| Nematoda | bilateral | false cavity | two | round, unsegmented |
| Annelida | bilateral | true coelom | two | segments and bristles |
| Mollusca | bilateral | true coelom | two | foot, mantle, shell |
| Echinodermata | five-part radial | true coelom | two | spiny skin, tube feet |
Tip
Memory hook for worms: flat means no cavity and one gut opening; round means a false cavity and a mouth plus an anus; ringed means segments and a true coelom.
Exam technique: if a question describes a disease caught from water containing snails, think fluke (Platyhelminthes). If the worm entered through bare feet, think hookworm (Nematoda).
Explain why flatworms have flat bodies.
Solution: Flatworms have no blood system and no breathing organs, so oxygen must diffuse in through the body surface. Diffusion only works over short distances, and a thin, flat body keeps every cell close to the surface.
Name the phylum of each: earthworm, Hydra, snail, hookworm, starfish.
Solution: earthworm: Annelida; Hydra: Cnidaria; snail: Mollusca; hookworm: Nematoda; starfish: Echinodermata.
Give two ways earthworms help farmers.
Solution: Their burrows let air and water into the soil, which helps roots breathe and helps drainage. They pull dead leaves underground and mix the soil, adding humus and returning minerals to it.
State two ways of avoiding tapeworm infection.
Solution: Cook pork and beef thoroughly; buy meat that has been inspected at an abattoir; use latrines so that animals do not eat tapeworm eggs.
