Drawing the Human Figure
Lesson 3 of 4
20 min
You do not need to be a doctor to draw a convincing body, but you do need a few anatomical landmarks. These are places where bone lies just under the skin, so they stay visible whatever the person wears or however they move. Like the checkpoints on a road, they let you test your drawing: if the elbow and the kneecap are in the right place, the rest usually follows.
Keza draws her cousin standing. The fingertips reach the knees and the eyes are one quarter of the way down the head. Check against the landmarks: fingertips belong at mid-thigh, so the arms are about half a head too long; the eyes belong halfway down, so the forehead is too small and the head looks flat on top. She shortens the forearms so that the wrists meet the crotch line and redraws the eye line across the middle of the head. The figure immediately looks more natural.
The Dutch painter Jacob de Wit (1695–1754) made this study of an old man's head as a plan for a figure of Moses. The head is turned in a three-quarter view, halfway between front and side.

Tip
Two checks that catch most mistakes: "eyes in the middle" for the head, and "fingertips at mid-thigh" for the body. Test your own body whenever you are unsure; you always carry a model with you.
What is an anatomical landmark, and why are landmarks useful to an artist?
Solution: a place where bone lies just under the skin, such as the kneecap or the collarbone. It stays visible in any pose or clothing, so you can use it to check proportion and position.
In a drawing, the arms hang down and the fingertips touch the knees. What is wrong, and how do you fix it?
Solution: the arms are too long. Fingertips should reach mid-thigh; move the wrists up to the crotch line and shorten the forearms and hands to match.
A head in your drawing is 12 cm tall from the top of the skull to the chin. How far from the top should the eye line be, and how far from the top is the base of the nose?
Solution: eyes halfway = 6 cm from the top. The nose base is halfway between the eyes (6 cm) and the chin (12 cm) = 9 cm from the top.
Which ankle bone sits higher, the inner or the outer?
Solution: the inner ankle bone is higher, and the outer one is lower.
