Weaving
Lesson 4 of 4
20 min
A weaving is not finished when the last row is beaten down. Loose tails, a crooked fringe or a piece that curls at the edges can spoil hours of good work. Finishing is what turns a practice piece into an artwork you can give, sell at a craft market or hang on a wall. Professional weavers spend real time on it, and examiners look for it.
Gatete's stick-loom weaving has 16 warp threads. Tied in pairs, that makes 16 ÷ 2 = 8 knots. After cutting, each warp end is 10 cm long. The knot uses about 2 cm, and he wants a fringe 6 cm long, so he trims 10 − 2 − 6 = 2 cm from each end with a ruler as his guide.
Check your work, and your classmates', against these criteria:
| Criterion | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Edges | Straight sides; the width is the same at the top, middle and bottom. |
| Tension | No gaps, no bulges, no loops at the edges. |
| Tails and knots | No tails showing on the front; knots tight and level; fringe even. |
| Design | A planned pattern of colour and texture, with a clear idea. |
| Presentation | Hangs flat and straight; a label gives the title, materials and size. |
For example, a label might read: “Kivu Evening”, wool and banana fibre on cotton warp, 15 cm × 20 cm, by Mutesi.
This cloth was woven from raffia palm fibre in the Kuba kingdom, in today's Democratic Republic of the Congo, around 1909. It is plain weave, the same move you have learned. Look at the top and bottom edges: the loose ends form a fringe. The darker bands were made by weaving with darker fibre. Among the Kuba, men wove this plain raffia cloth on looms, and women often decorated it afterwards with embroidery, which you will study in the next unit.
Tip
Finish from the back, cut two at a time. Weave tails into the back alongside a warp instead of knotting them, cut the warps from a stick loom only in pairs, and tie them straight away. A ruler gives a straight fringe every time.
Why do weavers add a header and a footer of plain weave?
Solution: the tight rows lock the design in place, so the weft cannot slide off the ends of the warp when the piece comes off the loom.
A weaving has 20 warp threads. How many knots do you tie if you tie them in pairs?
Solution: 20 ÷ 2 = 10 knots.
Mugisha has knotted all his weft tails together on the front of his weaving. Give him two pieces of advice.
Solution: undo the knots and weave each tail 2 to 3 cm into the back alongside a warp before trimming; knots make lumps, and tails belong on the back where they cannot be seen.
Warp ends are 12 cm long after cutting. The knot uses 2 cm and you want an 8 cm fringe. How much do you trim?
Solution: 12 − 2 − 8 = 2 cm.
