Performing Sketches in English or French
Lesson 3 of 4
25 min
An audience does not believe in actors; it believes in characters. When a classmate walks on stage and the audience forgets, for a moment, that it is Mugisha from S2B, the sketch has worked. This lesson shows you how to build a character step by step, and the stage techniques that keep a performance running smoothly. The worked example is a short sketch in French.
Before rehearsing, each actor fills in a character profile:
Writers describe two ways of revealing character. In direct characterisation someone simply says what a character is like ("Gatete is lazy"). In indirect characterisation the audience works it out from what the character says, what they do, how they look and move, and how others react to them. On stage, indirect is almost always stronger: let Gatete yawn, stretch and copy answers, and nobody needs to call him lazy.
Hi hi hi !
AMINA : (entre) David, attends ! Tes mains sont sales !
DAVID : Mais non, elles sont propres. Regarde !
MONSIEUR MICROBE : Oui, oui, très propres ! Mange, David, mange !
AMINA : Tu as joué au football, tu as touché le ballon, la terre... Lave-toi les mains avec du savon !
DAVID : Oh là là... D'accord, d'accord.
Fin.)
Key words: sale(s) dirty; propre(s) clean; le robinet the tap; le savon soap; se laver les mains to wash your hands; au secours ! help!; la récréation break time; le ventre the stomach; un beignet a doughnut (a mandazi); se figer to freeze.
In English: David comes back hungry from football and is about to eat a doughnut with dirty hands. Monsieur Microbe, a germ, tells the audience he plans to get into David's stomach. Amina sends David to wash his hands with soap, and the germ runs away in panic.
Here are the profiles the actors wrote.
| Monsieur Microbe | David | |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | to get into David's stomach | to eat at once |
| Obstacle | soap and water; Amina | Amina, who stops him |
| Traits | greedy, sneaky, cowardly | hungry, proud, good-natured |
| Voice | high and squeaky; whispers to the audience | loud and cheerful |
| Movement | creeps on tiptoe, rubs his hands, hides behind David | runs, bounces the ball, stands with his chest out |
Notice how the germ is funny and carries the message: the audience laughs at his panic when he sees the soap, and remembers why soap matters.
Tip
Want + obstacle = drama. In every scene, know what your character wants and what is in the way. If you know that, you will always know how to say the line, where to move and how to react.
Write a short profile (objective, obstacle, two traits, voice, movement) for a moto driver in a road-safety sketch.
Solution (one possibility): objective: to earn as much as possible today; obstacle: traffic and a passenger who refuses to wear a helmet; traits: impatient, friendly; voice: fast, loud over the engine; movement: leans forward, grips the handlebars, taps his foot while waiting.
In the middle of the performance your partner forgets a line. What do you do?
Solution: stay in character. Say something your character would naturally say to move the scene on, for example repeating the question in a different way, so that your partner can find the line. Never stop or laugh.
What does Amina mean by « Lave-toi les mains avec du savon ! », and what does Monsieur Microbe mean by « Au secours ! »?
Solution: "Wash your hands with soap!" and "Help!"
How could the actor playing Monsieur Microbe show, without words, that he is afraid of the soap?
Solution: by a sudden change of body and face: jumping back, shaking, hiding behind David, eyes wide with fear, then creeping away. This is indirect characterisation through movement and expression.
