Lesson 4 of 5

The Scratch library has hundreds of sounds, but your project becomes truly yours when it uses your own voice, your class clapping a rhythm, or a friend playing the guitar. To record and tidy up such a clip you use an audio editor. Audacity is a free, open-source audio editor. It was started in 1999 by Dominic Mazzoni and Roger Dannenberg at Carnegie Mellon University, first released in 2000, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Time runs from left to right, and the height of the wave shows how loud the sound is. A flat line is silence. A tall wave is loud. If the wave is squashed flat against the top and bottom edges of the track, the recording was too loud and will sound harsh and crackly; this is called clipping. Move the microphone further away and record again.

.aup3 files, which only Audacity can open.Audacity 4, released in September 2026, has a redesigned screen. If your school has it, the buttons look different, but the same ideas apply: record, select, edit, add effects, export.
| WAV | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| How it stores sound | Uncompressed: every detail is kept | Compressed: removes details the ear hardly notices |
| Quality | Best | Very good |
| Size of one minute (CD-quality stereo) | About 10 MB | About 1 MB (at 128 kilobits per second) |
| Best for | Keeping a master copy to edit later | Sharing, uploading and saving space |
Ishimwe records his class clapping a rhythm. The recording is 20 seconds long: 3 seconds of silence at the start, 15 seconds of clapping, and 2 seconds of laughter at the end.
Tip
Save is not Export. Save keeps an Audacity project for more editing; Export makes the MP3 or WAV file that Scratch, phones and music players can use. Exam answers about "getting the sound into Scratch" need the word export.
Which button or key starts a recording in Audacity, and which one plays it back?
Solution: Record, the red circle (or R), starts recording. Play, the triangle (or the Space bar), plays it back.
Uwase's waveform is squashed flat against the top and bottom of the track, and the sound crackles. What went wrong, and how should she fix it?
Solution: The recording was too loud, so it clipped. She should move the microphone further away or speak more softly, and record again.
A 30-second recording has a 5-second cough in the middle. Which tool removes it, and how long will the clip be afterwards?
Solution: Select the cough and press Delete. The clip becomes 30 − 5 = 25 seconds.
Why is MP3 usually better than WAV for a sound you will upload into Scratch?
Solution: MP3 is compressed, so the file is about ten times smaller for nearly the same quality. It uploads faster and takes less space.
Mutesi clicked Save and got an .aup3 file, but Scratch will not accept it. What should she do?
Solution: An .aup3 file is an Audacity project. She must export the audio as an MP3 or WAV file and upload that.
