Fundamentals of Athletics
Lesson 4 of 4
24 min
Athletics has three families of events: running, jumping and throwing. This lesson completes the set with one vertical jump and one throw. You already met the scissors jump in the traditional game of urukiramende; now you will jump it under competition rules. The shot put is the simplest throw to learn, but the shot is heavy, so its safety rules come first.
Recall the scissors: approach from the side at about 30° to 40° to the bar, take off from the foot farther from the bar, swing the near leg over, follow with the take-off leg, and land on your feet on a sand pit or mat. (The Fosbury flop, where the jumper goes over backwards, is only ever practised onto a deep high-jump landing mat.)

Umutoni's three puts in a class competition:
| Put | Distance | What happened | Valid? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6.42 m | Landed inside the sector; she left from the back | Yes |
| 2 | 7.05 m | She walked out of the front of the circle | No: foul |
| 3 | 6.80 m | The shot dropped below her shoulder and she threw it sideways | No: foul |
Her result is 6.42 m, her best valid put. Her two longer efforts do not count. If her second put had been valid, her result would have been 7.05 m, which is 7.05 − 6.42 = 0.63 m further. Controlled, legal technique is worth more than extra power.
Tip
Shot hook: "Neck, elbow up, hips, chest, punch." And the high-jump rule to learn by heart: one foot, three in a row: take off from one foot, and three failures in a row put you out.
A high jumper takes off from both feet and clears the bar. Is it a valid jump?
Solution. No. The rules require a take-off from one foot.
A jumper's card reads: 1.10 m clear, 1.15 m fail, fail, then she passes to 1.20 m and fails. Is she still in the competition?
Solution. No. Her failures at 1.15 m, 1.15 m and 1.20 m are three in a row, so she is eliminated with 1.10 m.
State the diameter of the shot put circle and the angle of the sector.
Solution. 2.135 m; 34.92°.
Why is the left arm pulled in to the side during a right-handed put?
Solution. It blocks the turn of the upper body, so the rotation of the hips and chest is passed on into the throwing arm, and the thrower does not spin out of the circle.
A classmate throws the shot back to the line for the next thrower. What should happen instead?
Solution. Shots are rolled or carried back, never thrown, and only after the teacher calls "collect".
