Lesson 3 of 3
22 min
In netball, where you may go depends on your position. A team wins when all seven players know their areas, do their own jobs and pass the ball through the thirds to the shooters. This lesson sets out the seven positions, how a game starts and restarts, and then puts everything together in a class game.
Figure 2. The court, and the red team's positions at a centre pass. Diagram: Ganzaa.
| Bib | Position | Areas allowed | Main job |
|---|---|---|---|
| GS | Goal shooter | Attacking third, including the circle | Scores goals from close to the post |
| GA | Goal attack | Centre third and attacking third, including the circle | Feeds and shoots; the second shooter |
| WA | Wing attack | Centre third and attacking third, not the circle | Takes the centre pass and feeds the shooters |
| C | Centre | All three thirds, not the circles | Takes the centre pass; links defence and attack |
| WD | Wing defence | Defending third and centre third, not the circle | Marks the opposing WA |
| GD | Goal defence | Defending third, including the circle, and centre third | Marks the opposing GA |
| GK | Goal keeper | Defending third, including the circle | Marks the opposing GS; defends the goal |
Entering an area your position is not allowed in is offside, whether or not you have the ball. The other team gets a free pass where it happened.
Byiringiro, playing wing attack, sprints into the attacking shooting circle to catch a pass close to the post.
Decision. Offside: the WA may not enter the shooting circle. The other team gets a free pass. He should lead to the edge of the circle and pass in to the GS or GA.
Warm-up (7 minutes). Jog, side-step and dodge; dynamic stretches. Pass in threes while moving up the court, with every pass caught in a new third.
Positions walk-through (6 minutes). Each team stands in the Figure 2 shape. The teacher calls a position; that player walks every area she may enter and says her main job.
Class game (22 minutes).
Cool-down (5 minutes). Walk and stretch; each team names one rule it found hard and one tactic that worked.
Tip
Exam technique. For a position question, give the bib letters, the areas allowed and one job, for example: "WD: defending and centre thirds, not the circle; marks the opposing WA."
Which position may enter all three thirds but neither circle?
Solution. The centre (C).
Which two positions may enter the defending circle?
Solution. The goal defence (GD) and the goal keeper (GK).
Red scored the last goal and took the last centre pass. Which team takes the next one?
Solution. Blue. Centre passes alternate between the teams, whichever team scored.
The GS runs out of the attacking third into the centre third to help. What is the call?
Solution. Offside: the GS may play only in the attacking third. The other team gets a free pass.
