Introduction to Composition Arrangement
Lesson 4 of 4
20 min
Let's begin
Umutoni draws her grandmother holding her baby cousin. But the grandmother's head is nearly as big as her body, and the baby looks like a tiny grown-up with a small head.
"Every part is the right shape," says Teacher Habimana kindly, "but the parts are not the right size compared with each other." That is what proportion is about.
Proportion is the size of one thing compared with another thing, or with the whole. How big is a head compared with a body? How tall is a jug compared with a cup? How big is a goat next to a cow? When the proportions are right, a drawing looks real. Artists sometimes change proportion on purpose, for example the big heads in cartoons, but first they learn the real sizes.
Artists use the head as a ruler for the whole body. Measure from the top of the head to the chin: that is one "head".
To compare sizes in a still life or a group of people, use your pencil as a measuring stick. This is called sighting.
A good composition uses all three ideas from this unit. Balance the shapes across the page, use perspective to show near and far, and keep every person and object in proportion. Remember: in perspective, a person far away is drawn smaller, but the parts of their body keep the same proportions.
Jean-François Millet painted The Gleaners in France in 1857. After the harvest, three women pick up the ears of wheat left lying in the field.

Diego Velázquez painted this portrait of Juan de Pareja in 1650. Juan de Pareja worked in Velázquez's studio in Spain and became a painter himself.

Tip
Heads for bodies, eyes in the middle
Measure people in heads, and remember that the eyes sit halfway down the head, not near the top.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
What is proportion in art?
Answer: The size of one part compared with another part, or with the whole.
About how many heads tall is an adult?
Answer: About 7 heads.
Where are the eyes on a head?
Answer: About halfway between the top of the head and the chin.
In Niyonzima's drawing of his uncle, the fingertips only reach the waist. What is wrong?
Answer: The arms are too short. The elbows should be at the waist and the fingertips should reach the middle of the thighs.
Make it: Draw a scene from market day or umuganda. Balance the shapes, show near and far, and measure each person in heads.
