Lesson 4 of 4
25 min
Let's begin
In the throwing lesson, Mugisha picks up a stone from the edge of the field. "I'll use this as my shot!" His teacher stops him at once. And Uwase asks, "Why do we have to push the shot? Throwing is faster!"
Today you will find out why each throwing implement has its own action, why stones and sharp sticks are never used, and how to throw the shot, the discus and the javelin safely.
| Implement | What it is | How it is thrown |
|---|---|---|
| Shot | A heavy metal ball. In open competitions it weighs 7.26 kg for men and 4 kg for women. | Pushed from the neck with one hand |
| Discus | A flat, round disc with a smooth metal rim | Slung out with a sweeping sidearm swing, so it spins |
| Javelin | A long, light spear. It weighs 800 g for men and 600 g for women. | Thrown overarm, over the shoulder |
School and junior competitions use lighter implements. At school you can use:
Never use a stone, a metal pole or a sharpened stick. They can badly hurt someone.
Jog 2 laps. Swing your arms in big circles, forwards and backwards. Twist your body gently from side to side with your arms out. Then do 10 chest pushes with a ball against a wall or to a partner.
In real competitions, a throw only counts if it lands inside the sector. Shot putters and discus throwers throw from a circle and must leave it from the back half, after the implement has landed.

Top discus throwers spin round one and a half times inside the circle before they let go, but at school you throw from standing.

In competitions the javelin must be thrown overarm, over the shoulder, and you may not turn your back to the landing area. It only counts if the tip lands first, inside the sector.
Walk slowly. Stretch your throwing arm across your chest and above your head, then stretch your back and legs. Collect all the implements together and count them back in.

Stay safe
Tip
"Shot: push. Discus: sling. Javelin: over the top."
And before every throw: Look! Is the area clear?
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Why must the shot be pushed and not thrown like a ball?
Answer: It is a rule of the shot put: the shot stays close to the neck and is pushed with one hand. Throwing a heavy ball with a bent arm could also hurt your elbow and shoulder.
What makes the discus spin as it flies?
Answer: It rolls off your first finger as you let it go.
When does a javelin throw count in a competition?
Answer: When it is thrown overarm, over the shoulder, and its tip lands first, inside the sector.
Mugisha wants to use a stone as a shot. What could he use instead?
Answer: A light school shot, or a thick sock filled with sand and knotted.
You have thrown your shot. Your friend is still waiting to throw. Can you go and fetch your shot?
Answer: No. Wait behind the line until the teacher says "Collect!", then walk out and carry it back.
