Basic Basketball Tactics
Lesson 2 of 4
17 min
Let's begin
Mutesi wants the ball back, so she reaches in and slaps at it. The whistle blows: foul! She tries again, and the attacker simply steps past her and scores.
"Defend with your feet, not your hands," says the teacher. Today you will learn individual defending tactics: how to stand, where to stand, and how to win the ball back fairly.
Jog, then do defensive slides from one side of the court to the other: stay low and step sideways without crossing your feet. Play "mirror": face a partner, who moves left, right, forwards and back while you copy them.
Picture a line from the ball to your basket. Stay on that line, about an arm's length from the player with the ball. When they dribble to one side, slide your feet to stay in front. If you cross your feet or lean, they will get past you.
After a shot, most missed balls are caught by the defending team, because defenders are usually closer to the basket. To make sure you get it, box out: turn to face the basket, back gently into your player to keep them behind you, then jump for the ball.
Call "Ball!" when you are guarding the player with the ball, and "Shot!" when they shoot, so your teammates turn to box out.
Play 2 against 2 on half a court. The defending team scores 1 point for every stop (a missed shot, a steal or a rebound) made without a foul.
Walk slowly. Stretch the insides of your legs, your calves and your back. Drink water.

Warning
Stay safe
Tip
Low, wide, on the line. Feet, not hands!
Stay between your player and the basket, slide without crossing your feet, contest with a straight arm, and box out after every shot.
Try each one first, then tap Show answer to check.
Where should you stand when you guard the player with the ball?
Answer: On the line between the ball and your basket, about an arm's length away.
Why should you watch your player's hips rather than the ball?
Answer: The ball, head and eyes can fake, but the hips show where the player is really going.
Niyonzima jumps into a player who is shooting a three-point shot. The shot misses. How many free throws does the shooter get?
Answer: Three.
A shot is already coming down towards the basket, and a defender knocks it away. What is this called, and what happens?
Answer: Goaltending. The basket counts for the attacking team.
What are the three steps of boxing out?
Answer: Turn to face the basket, back gently into your player, then jump for the ball.
