Ma famille
Lesson 3 of 4
15 min
Keza wants to talk about her family. She only needs three little keys: c'est, j'ai and j'aime.
Let's learn them!
Mugisha : Tu as un frère ?
Keza : Oui, j'ai un frère. C'est Gatete.
Mugisha : Tu aimes ton frère ?
Keza : Oui, j'aime mon frère !
Tu as …? = Do you have …? Tu aimes …? = Do you love …?
[ɛ] is like the e in bed: père, mère, frère, elle, j'aime.
[ə] is a small, soft sound, a bit like uh: je, le, de, petit.
Listen: « je » has [ə], but « j'aime » has [ɛ].
Say this three times: « Mon père et ma mère aiment mon petit frère. »
Tip
Smile for [ɛ], relax for [ə]. For [ɛ] in père, open your mouth a little, like a small smile. For [ə] in je, make your lips round and soft.
Say in French: I have a sister.
Answer: J'ai une sœur.
Complete: ___ mon grand-père. (This is)
Answer: C'est mon grand-père.
Say in French: I love my family.
Answer: J'aime ma famille.
Which word has the soft sound [ə]: « je » or « mère »?
Answer: je.
