Sets

You will describe sets in words, by listing and in set-builder notation; find subsets, complements, unions, intersections and differences; draw Venn diagrams with two and three sets to solve counting problems; and represent relations and mappings between sets with ordered pairs, arrow diagrams and graphs.

Sets of Numbers

You will work with the sets of natural numbers, integers, decimal numbers, rational numbers and real numbers; use the properties of the four operations in each set to calculate efficiently; convert between fractions, terminating decimals and recurring decimals; recognise irrational numbers such as √2 and π; and explain how the sets fit inside one another, ℕ ⊂ ℤ ⊂ 𝔻 ⊂ ℚ ⊂ ℝ.

Linear Functions, Equations and Inequalities

Locate points on the number line and the Cartesian plane, draw straight-line graphs and read their intercepts and gradient, simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions, and solve linear equations and inequalities, including real problems about moto fares, market prices and data bundles.

Ratio and Proportions

Simplify ratios and share quantities in a given ratio, use scales on maps and plans, recognise and solve direct and inverse proportion from tables, formulas and graphs, and work out the price and quantities of a mixture, with cooperative, market and umuganda examples.

Percentage, Discount, Profit and Loss

Work with percentages of quantities, use multipliers for percentage increase and decrease, and solve everyday problems on discount, commission, profit and loss, simple interest on loans and savings, and VAT at 18%, in Rwandan francs.

Points, Lines and Angles

You will name and draw points, lines, rays and segments; measure angles with a protractor and classify them; use the angle facts for a straight line, a point and vertically opposite angles; find corresponding, alternate and co-interior angles where a transversal crosses parallel lines; and calculate the angles of triangles and other polygons.

Statistics with Ungrouped Data

You will classify data as qualitative or quantitative, discrete or continuous; collect it and organise it in tally, frequency and cumulative frequency tables; draw and read pictograms, bar charts, pie charts, line graphs and cumulative frequency diagrams; and summarise a data set with its mean, median, mode, quartiles, range, inter-quartile range and midrange.

Elementary Probability

You will describe experiments by their outcomes, sample spaces and events; place events on the probability scale from 0 to 1; estimate probabilities from repeated trials; calculate theoretical probabilities for equally likely outcomes, including two dice; and use the basic rules of probability, including the complement rule.
