Sets
Lesson 3 of 5
25 min
In an S1 class at a school in Rubavu, the debate club and the science club have these members:
The class teacher wants to know: Who is in both clubs? Who is in at least one club? Who is in the debate club only? Each question asks for a new set made from and . The three ways of making it are called intersection, union and difference.
Definition
Intersection of and : the set of elements that are in and in .
Read as "A intersection B" or "A and B".
Example: .
Definition
Disjoint sets: two sets with no element in common, so that . In a Venn diagram their circles are drawn apart.
Example: in , the odd numbers and the even numbers are disjoint.
Definition
Union of and : the set of elements that are in or in (or in both).
Read as "A union B".
Example: . Chantal and Esther are in both clubs, but each name is written once.
Definition
Difference of and : the set of elements that are in but not in .
Notation: , also written . Notice that .
Example: , the learners in the debate club only, while .
Definition
Symmetric difference of and : the set of elements that are in exactly one of the two sets.
Example: .
Worked example 1: all the operations on two sets
, is the set of the factors of 12 and is the set of the prime numbers in . Draw a Venn diagram, then find , , , , and .
Solution First list the sets: and . Place the common elements, 2 and 3, in the overlap first; then the rest of each set; then the elements of that are in neither set.
Check: , and . You will use this check again in the next lesson.
Worked example 2: reading a Venn diagram
From the diagram, list , , , , and .
Solution A set is everything inside its circle, including the overlap.
Important
Rule: if , then and .
Why: every element of is already in . So the elements in both sets are just the elements of , and joining to adds nothing new. For example, and .
Warning
The examples use , and .

Tip
The cup-shaped collects everything, like a cup that holds the contents of both sets: U for Union. The is the cup turned upside down, covering only what the two sets share.
Khan Academy: Intersection and union of sets (8 min). Watch how an element that belongs to both sets is written only once in the union, and how the intersection keeps only the shared elements.
Practice
Questions 1 to 3 use , and .
