Lesson 2 of 5
25 min
Suppose a moto rider in Kigali charges a fixed 300 Frw to start a trip, plus 100 Frw for every kilometre. The fare depends on the distance, and each extra kilometre adds exactly the same amount. Put that into a table and something useful appears.
| Distance (km) | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fare (Frw) | 300 | 400 | 500 | 600 | 700 | 800 |
The fare rises by 100 Frw at every step, so the points lie on a straight line. The rule behind the table is .

Definition
Function: a rule that gives exactly one output for each input. We write , read " of ", for the output when the input is .
Example: if , then .
Definition
Linear function: a function of the form where and are fixed numbers. Its graph is a straight line. is the gradient and is the -intercept.
Example: in , and .
Worked example
Draw the graph of for
Substitute each value of . For example, when : .
Plot the six points and join them. The line crosses the -axis at , and as the equation predicts.
Definition
-intercept: the point where a graph crosses the -axis. Every point on the -axis has , so find it by putting .
-intercept: the point where a graph crosses the -axis. Every point on the -axis has , so find it by putting .
Example: for , the -intercept is and the -intercept is .
Worked example
Find the intercepts of and use them to draw the line
Definition
Gradient (or slope) of a straight line: how steep it is, measured as the change in for each change in . For any two points and on the line,
Example: on , from to the rise is 4 and the run is 2, so .
Why the gradient is the same everywhere on the line. Draw a gradient triangle anywhere under a straight line. Each such triangle has the same angles, so they are enlargements of one another, and is the same for all of them. That single number is in : each step of 1 to the right changes by .
| Gradient | The line… | Example |
|---|---|---|
| rises from left to right | ||
| falls from left to right | ||
| is horizontal |
Worked example
Find the gradient of the line through and , then its equation
The line falls, as a negative gradient should. So . Point is on the line, so , which gives . The equation is : the orange line in the diagram above.
Worked example
Use the moto graph. What do and mean, and how far can you ride for 1,000 Frw?
Warning
Keep the same order top and bottom. In , if you start with point on top you must start with underneath too. Mixing the order flips the sign of the gradient. And the formula is rise over run: is upside down.
Warning
Read as the number multiplying . In the gradient is , not 5. Rewrite it as first if that helps.
Tip
In , think "m for move" (how much moves for each step across) and "c for crossing" (where the line crosses the -axis).
Math Antics (mathantics): "Basic Linear Functions". Watch for how a table of values becomes a straight line, and how the slope and the y-intercept show up in y = mx + b (b is another letter for c).
Practice
Draw your own axes on squared paper where a graph is needed.
