Series
Lesson 3 of 4
25 min
A calculator's circuits can only do arithmetic, yet a calculator returns at once. One way to get such values from arithmetic alone is to write functions such as , and as "polynomials with infinitely many terms". For instance, already agrees with to five decimal places. This lesson shows where such series come from, and for which they are valid.
Definition
Power series in : a series , where the are constants. More generally, a power series about is .
Interval of convergence: the set of for which the series converges. It is always an interval centred at , of half-width , the radius of convergence (possibly or ).
Example: the geometric series for , so .
Worked example 1: an interval of convergence
Find the interval of convergence of .
Solution Apply the ratio test to the absolute values: . So the series converges for and diverges for : . The end points need separate tests. At it is the harmonic series, which diverges. At it is , which converges by Leibniz. The interval is .
Important
Maclaurin series. If a function can be written as a power series near 0, the coefficients are forced. Put : . Differentiate once and put : . Differentiate twice: . In general, differentiating times kills the terms before , turns that term into , and leaves terms that still contain . So and
The sum of the first terms, up to , is the Maclaurin polynomial of degree .
Worked example 2: the series for and
Solution For , every derivative is , so and
For , the derivatives cycle through , so at 0 they are . Only odd powers survive, with alternating signs:
By the ratio test both converge for every real : for , .
| Function | Series | Valid for |
|---|---|---|
| all real | ||
| all real | ||
| all real | ||
| (all if ) |
The series for uses Lesson 2 of Unit 2: the th derivative of at 0 is , and dividing by leaves . At it gives , the alternating series of Lesson 2. The last row is the binomial series: when is a natural number it stops, and it is the binomial expansion of S4 (Combinatorics).
Important
Euler's formula from the series (promised in Unit 1). Put in the series for and use , , :
and the two brackets are the series of and . So .
Definition
Taylor series of about : the same idea centred at ,
A Maclaurin series is the Taylor series about . Choose where and its derivatives are easy to evaluate and close to the you need.
Example: about , for .
Worked example 3: from a Taylor series
Solution Take about : , , so ; , so . Hence
A calculator gives : three terms are already within of it.
Inside its interval of convergence, a power series may be substituted into, multiplied, and differentiated term by term. This is usually much quicker than differentiating again and again.

Warning
A series is only valid inside its interval of convergence. Putting into does not give : the terms grow without limit, and the series diverges. Always state the interval with the series.
Tip
Learn the five standard series with their intervals; build everything else from them by substitution, multiplication or differentiation. In an exam, "find the first three non-zero terms" nearly always wants this method rather than repeated differentiation.
3Blue1Brown: Taylor series (Chapter 11, Essence of calculus). Watch how each new term is chosen to match one more derivative at the centre point, and the pictures of polynomials hugging cos x.
Practice
State the interval of validity with every series.
