Linear and Quadratic Functions
Lesson 5 of 5
25 min
A table of values gives an accurate graph, but it takes time. In an exam you are often asked for a sketch: the right shape, with the key points marked and labelled exactly. Five facts are enough to fix a parabola. The same graph can then solve equations: wherever the curve meets a line, the coordinates satisfy both equations at once.
Important
Sketching in five steps
Worked example 1: a full sketch
Sketch .
Solution : . -intercept .
-intercepts: , so and .
Axis (midway between 2 and 4 ✓); vertex , so .
Mirror of in : .
Important
How many -intercepts? Ask the discriminant. The discriminant of is (Unit 2).
| Roots of | The parabola and the -axis | |
|---|---|---|
| two different real roots | crosses it twice | |
| one repeated root | touches it at the vertex | |
| no real roots | never meets it |
Definition
Solving an equation graphically: the solutions of are the -coordinates of the points where the curve meets the horizontal line . In particular, the roots of are the -intercepts.
Example: the roots of are read from the graph above as and .
Worked example 2: one graph, three equations
Use the graph of to solve (a) (b) (c) .
Solution (a) Read the -intercepts: or .
(b) Draw . It meets the curve at and . Check: ✓.
(c) First make the left side match the graph: subtract 3 from both sides, . Draw : it meets the curve at and . (The exact roots are and .)
Important
Where a line meets a parabola. To find where meets , set the two expressions for equal:
Each root gives the -coordinate of a meeting point; substitute into the line to get . The discriminant of this new equation tells you how many points there are: two if , one if (the line is a tangent, touching the curve), and none if .
Worked example 3: two meeting points
Find where the line meets the parabola .
Solution
gives ; gives . The points are and . Check in the parabola: ✓.
Worked example 4: a line that just touches
Find the value of for which the line touches the parabola , and the point of contact.
Solution gives . The line touches when this has a repeated root, that is, :
Then , so and : the tangent touches at . For the line cuts the curve twice; for it misses.
Warning
Match the graph before you read it. To solve with the graph of , you must draw , not : both sides must first be changed so that the left side is exactly the function drawn.
Readings are estimates. A graph gives roots to about one decimal place. When the question says "exact", use algebra.
Tip
Label every key point with its coordinates on a sketch, even when the drawing is rough. The marks are for the intercepts, the vertex and the shape, not for neat curves.
Khan Academy: Quadratic systems, a line and a parabola. Watch how setting the two expressions for y equal gives a quadratic equation, and how its solutions are the meeting points on the graph.
Practice
The last three are harder.
