Right-Angled Triangles
Lesson 4 of 5
25 min
In Unit 6 a road sign of 10% meant a gradient of 0.1: the road rises 10 m for every 100 m across. What angle does that road make with the horizontal? The rise is opposite the angle and the horizontal run is adjacent to it, and neither is the hypotenuse, so sine and cosine do not fit directly. The third ratio, the tangent, is made for this: it links the two legs.
Definition
Tangent of an acute angle in a right-angled triangle:
Notation: (SHIFT tan) gives the angle whose tangent is a given number.
Example: in the 3, 4, 5 triangle, for the angle opposite 3, , and .
Important
Two identities. For every acute angle :
Why: with opposite , adjacent and hypotenuse , ; and by Pythagoras. (Here means .)
Exact values: , , . Unlike sine and cosine, the tangent can be greater than 1: whenever .
Important
Choosing the ratio. Mark the angle, label the sides O, A and H, and pick the ratio that uses the two sides in the question (one known, one wanted).
| The two sides involved | Use |
|---|---|
| opposite and hypotenuse | |
| adjacent and hypotenuse | |
| opposite and adjacent | |
| three sides, no angle | Pythagoras |
To solve a right-angled triangle means to find all its unknown sides and angles. The two acute angles always add up to .
Worked example 1: the height of a roof
Each side of a roof slopes at , and the horizontal distance from the wall top to the middle is 4.5 m. How high is the ridge above the wall top?
Solution In triangle , is opposite and 4.5 m is adjacent, so use tangent:
Worked example 2: angles from gradients
(a) What angle does a road with a 10% gradient make with the horizontal? (b) What angle does the line make with the -axis?
Solution A gradient is rise over run, which is opposite over adjacent, so gradient .
(a) , so . A "steep" 10% road is less than .
(b) , so .
Worked example 3: solving a triangle from two sides
Solve the triangle: find , and .
Solution Pythagoras: .
For , 7 is opposite and 24 is adjacent: , so . Then .
Check: and ✓.
Worked example 4: solving a triangle from a side and an angle
Triangle has , hypotenuse cm and . Solve it.
Solution . cm (opposite ), and cm (adjacent to ).
Check: ✓.
Worked example 5: from one ratio to the others
is acute and . Find and without a calculator.
Solution , so (positive, as is acute). Then .
Warning
Keep full calculator values until the end. Rounding to 0.5 would give a roof 2.25 m high instead of 2.39 m.
The tangent has no value at (the adjacent side would be 0). If a calculation asks for , a side or angle has been mislabelled.
Tip
SOH CAH TOA, and one check: the two acute angles must add to , and the hypotenuse must be the longest side.
Khan Academy: Trig to solve the sides and angles of a right triangle. Watch how the right ratio is chosen for each unknown, and how the last angle is found from the angle sum.
Practice
Give lengths to 3 significant figures and angles to 1 decimal place. The last three are harder.
