In lesson 3 the spring was left alone. Now push it: a washing machine drum that is off balance, a speaker cone driven by a signal, a circuit fed by an alternating supply. The push adds a function of time to the right-hand side, . The solution splits into two parts, each with a clear meaning: the system's own free motion, and the motion forced on it by .
Definition
Complementary function : the general solution of the homogeneous equation (lesson 3). It contains the two arbitrary constants.
Particular integral : any one solution of the full equation , with no arbitrary constants.
Example: for , and , since .
Important
Theorem. The general solution of is
Reason: write . If is any solution, then , so solves the homogeneous equation: for some choice of the constants. Conversely, .
When is a polynomial, an exponential, a sine or cosine, or a sum of these, has the same shape as . Guess that shape with unknown coefficients, substitute, and compare coefficients.

Worked example 1: a polynomial right-hand side
Find the general solution of .
Solution , so . Try : , . Substituting,
Compare coefficients: , so ; , so ; , so . Hence
Worked example 2: exponentials, including a clash with
Find a particular integral of (a) (b) .
Solution The roots are 1 and 2, so .
Worked example 3: trigonometric forcing and initial conditions
(a) Solve with , . (b) Find a particular integral of .
Solution The roots are , so .
Part (b) is resonance: when a system is pushed at its own natural frequency, every push adds to the motion and the amplitude grows. In a real system damping or breakage stops the growth. This is why engineers check that the natural frequencies of a bridge or a machine stay away from the frequencies of the forces that will act on it.
Worked example 4: a sum of functions
Find the general solution of .
Solution gives . Treat the two parts separately. For : try ; then , so . For : try ; then , so . By superposition,
Warning
Two classic errors. (1) For , the trial alone fails whenever , because brings in : always use . (2) Find the initial-condition constants only after adding . Fitting and to alone gives the wrong answer.
