Lesson 4 of 5
25 min
Draw and you see a single, smooth sine wave, only taller and shifted to the left (Figure 1). That is no accident. For any and angle , the addition formula gives
So equals as soon as and . Squaring and adding gives ; dividing gives , with the quadrant of fixed by the signs of and .
Definition
Harmonic form (amplitude–phase form) of , where and are not both 0:
is the amplitude and the phase angle. The same expression can be written with and .
Example: : , , , so and the expression is .
Important
Solving
Worked example 1: exact angles
Solve for .
Solution From the definition box, the equation is , so :
Answer: or , the two crossing points in Figure 1. Check: . ✓
Worked example 2: a calculator angle
Solve for , and find the greatest value of the left side.
Solution Here a minus sign suits the form . So , , and (first quadrant, as both are positive).
Answer: or . Solutions exist because . The greatest value is , when , that is .
With the t-formulae of Lesson 2, becomes , a quadratic equation in . This method needs no phase angle, but does not exist when . Those values are never produced by the quadratic, so you must test in the original equation yourself.
Worked example 3: by the t-substitution
Solve for .
Solution
Check: . ✓
Warning
The t-substitution can hide . For it gives , so and only. But is also a solution: . Always test separately.
To solve an inequality such as , use the equation to find the boundary, and the graph (or the unit circle) to choose the side:
Definition
Trigonometric inequality: an inequality in which the unknown appears inside a trigonometric function, such as or . Its solution is a set of intervals, usually infinitely many, repeating with the period of the function.
Example: for , and in general for , .
Worked example 4: a tangent of a double angle
Solve for .
Solution On one branch of the tangent, , the tangent increases from to , so exactly when . With the period : , so
and give the answer in : . The right ends are open because is undefined there.
Worked example 5: a table of signs
Solve for .
Solution , and we need this product to be positive. The factors are zero at (for ) and (for ):

Answer: . Test one point: at , . ✓
Tip
Inequalities in harmonic form. Write as first, then solve for the angle . For example, Figure 1 shows at once that for in .

Practice
Angles in degrees to two decimal places where they are not exact. The last two are harder.
