Matrices and Determinants of Order 3
Lesson 4 of 5
40 min
A rotation through about the -axis is undone by a rotation through ; an enlargement with scale factor 3 is undone by scale factor . The projection onto the -plane cannot be undone: the points and both land on , and nothing can tell them apart afterwards. For numbers, and 0 has no reciprocal. For matrices the role of 1 is played by and the role of 0 by a zero determinant.
Definition
A square matrix is invertible (or non-singular) if there is a matrix with . Then is the inverse of , written . A matrix with no inverse is singular.
The inverse is unique: if and both work, then .
Definition
The adjugate (or adjoint) of , written , is the transpose of the matrix of cofactors:
Important
Theorem. For every of order 3, . Hence is invertible if and only if , and then
Reason. Entry of is row of times its own cofactors, which is the expansion of along row . Entry with is row times the cofactors of row : that is the expansion of a determinant whose rows and are equal, so it is 0. Dividing by gives the formula. Conversely, if exists, , so .
Worked example 1: the inverse by the adjugate
Find the inverse of .
Step 1. , so exists.
Steps 2 and 3. The cofactors, for example and :
Steps 4 and 5.
Step 6. Row 1 of times column 1 of : ; row 1 times column 2: . Every product gives , so . ✓
Important
Properties of the inverse (for invertible of order 3 and ):
Worked example 2: when does the inverse exist?
For which real is invertible?
Solution.
is invertible for every real except and . (For , rows 1 and 2 are equal, which confirms the first root.)
Worked example 3: the inverse of a rotation
Find for the rotation through about the -axis, and describe it.
Solution. . The cofactors are , so
which is the rotation through about the -axis, as expected. Every rotation matrix has .
Worked example 4: an inverse from a matrix equation
Let . Show that and use it to find .
Solution. . On the diagonal ; off the diagonal . So , that is . Therefore
the same as with .

Tip
Remember the formula as "adjugate over determinant": , just like the case, where .
3Blue1Brown: Inverse matrices, column space and null space, Chapter 7 of Essence of Linear Algebra (about 12 min). Watch why a transformation that squashes space onto a plane (determinant 0) has no inverse.
Practice
Questions 1 to 3 are routine; 4 to 6 need more care; 7 asks for a proof.
