Vector Space of Real Numbers
Lesson 3 of 5
25 min
An agro-dealer stocks two fertiliser blends. A bag of blend A supplies of nitrogen and of phosphorus; a bag of blend B supplies of nitrogen and of phosphorus (illustrative figures). A cooperative's maize plot needs exactly of nitrogen and of phosphorus. How many bags of each?
Write each bag as a vector (nitrogen, phosphorus). We want numbers and with
From the second equation ; then gives and . One bag of A and four of B: . The target is a linear combination of the two blends. Could every target be reached this way, and when is a third blend useless? Those are the questions of this lesson.
Definition
Linear combination: a vector is a linear combination of when there are real numbers (the coefficients) such that
Span: the set of all linear combinations of is their span, written . If the span is all of , the vectors span (or generate) .
Example: , so .
Let and . To reach , solve : and . Adding gives , so and . In the diagram you walk two steps of , then three steps of . The dashed lines form a slanted grid built from and ; in that grid has "coordinates" and , an idea the next lesson develops.
The span is always a subspace. It contains ; the sum of two combinations is a combination (add the coefficients); and times a combination is a combination (multiply the coefficients by ). In the span of one non-zero vector is a line through , and the span of two non-parallel vectors is the whole plane.
Worked example 1: is it in the span?
(a) Write as a linear combination of and . (b) Is in ?
Solution.
(a) gives and . From the second, ; then , so and . Hence . Check: . ✓
(b) We need : the first components give , the second give . No single works, so is not in the span; it is not on the line through in the direction .
Definition
Linear dependence and independence: vectors are linearly dependent if there are scalars , not all zero, with
Otherwise they are linearly independent: the only way to make is the trivial combination .
Example: and are dependent, because . In words: one of them is a multiple of the other.
Important
Theorem (two vectors in ). For and , the following are equivalent:
Proof of the test. Look for with , that is and . Multiply the first equation by , the second by and subtract: . In the same way . If , then is forced: independent. If , the pair satisfies both equations (check: and ), and so does . One of these pairs is non-zero unless , and in that case both vectors are . Either way the vectors are dependent.
The number is the determinant of the pair; you will study it in the next unit.
Worked example 2: testing pairs
Decide whether each pair is linearly dependent or independent. (a) , (b) , (c) Find every for which and are dependent.
Solution.
(a) : dependent. Indeed .
(b) : independent.
(c) or . Check : ; : . ✓
Important
Theorem (three vectors in ). Any three vectors of are linearly dependent.
Proof. If and are dependent, a non-trivial relation already exists; add . If they are independent, then and the system can be solved (eliminate as in the proof above: and come out as known numbers, and you divide by ). Then , and the coefficient is not zero.
Worked example 3: finding the dependence relation
Show that , and are linearly dependent by finding a relation between them.
Solution. and are independent (), so write : and . Subtracting, , so and . Check: . ✓ The relation is
with coefficients , not all zero.
Warning
Independence belongs to the whole set. and are independent, but add and the set of three is dependent: . And any set that contains is dependent, because is a non-trivial relation. Never call a single vector of a set "the dependent one" without saying which relation you mean.
Tip
For two vectors of , write them side by side, , and cross-multiply: . Zero means dependent (parallel); anything else means independent.
Dr. Trefor Bazett: Linear dependence and independence, geometrically (about 8 min). Watch for how a dependent set always has a vector that lies in the span of the others.
