Me and My Family
Lesson 1 of 3
10 min
Let's begin
It is the first morning in a new class. Uwase stands quietly by the door.
The teacher smiles at her. “Welcome! What is your name?” she asks.
Uwase takes a deep breath. She knows what to say. Today you will learn to say it too — your name, your age, and where you live.
Uwase answers the teacher like this:
My name is Uwase.
Now put your own name in that sentence. If your name is Keza, you say: My name is Keza. If your name is Gatete, you say: My name is Gatete.
Look carefully at the big letters. My is big because it starts the sentence. Keza is big because it is a name. Every name starts with a big letter.
The teacher asks Uwase, “How old are you?”
Uwase is 7. She says: I am 7 years old.
Her friend Keza is 8. Keza says: I am 8 years old.
Careful here! We do not say “I have 8 years.” In English, your age uses I am.
And see the word I? It is always a big letter. Always. Even in the middle of a sentence.
Where do you sleep at night? Where is your home? That is where you live.
Mugisha sleeps in Musanze. He says: I live in Musanze.
Uwase sleeps in Kigali. She says: I live in Kigali.
You can name your village, your town, or even your country: I live in Rwanda.
Uwase stands up and tells the whole class who she is:
My name is Uwase. I am 7 years old. I live in Kigali.
Three short sentences. That is all you need. Everybody now knows her.
| They ask | You answer |
|---|---|
| What is your name? | My name is Keza. |
| How old are you? | I am 8 years old. |
| Where do you live? | I live in Huye. |
