Me and My Family
Lesson 2 of 3
12 min
Let's begin
Keza is drawing on a clean page. She draws a tall man. She draws a woman with a baby tied on her back. She draws a boy kicking a ball.
Mutesi leans over. “Who are all those people?” she asks.
Keza points with her pencil. “Come and see,” she says. “This is my family.”
Today you will learn to talk about your family too.
Your mother and your father together are called your parents.
Keza puts her finger on the tall man in her drawing.
This is my father.
She moves her finger to the woman: This is my mother.
She moves it to the boy with the ball: This is my brother.
Use This is my … when the person is right there — standing beside you, or right there in a picture — and you can point at them.
Now Keza puts her pencil down. She is not pointing at anybody. She is only telling Mutesi about her home.
I have a brother.
I have a baby sister.
One brother — say a brother. But if there are two, the word grows an s at the end.
| How many | You say |
|---|---|
| 1 | I have a brother. |
| 2 | I have two brothers. |
| 3 | I have three sisters. |
Never say “I have a brothers.” Choose one way or the other: a brother, or two brothers.
Once you have said who the person is, you do not need to say it again. Use a short word instead.
My father is tall. He is tall. — Use he for a boy or a man.
My sister is small. She is small. — Use she for a girl or a woman.
Tip
Are you pointing, or are you telling?
If your finger is pointing at the person, say This is my …
If you are only telling someone about them, say I have a …
Point, then This is. Tell, then I have.
