All About Me and My Family
Lesson 3 of 3
13 min
Ishimwe has a pen friend who lives far away, near Lake Kivu. Her letter arrives and it asks one simple question: "Tell me about your home. What is inside it?"
Ishimwe picks up his pencil. Then he stops. He can see his whole home inside his head - but how do you put a home into English words?
Two small phrases will do it: there is and there are. Learn them today and you can describe any room on earth.
And here are things you may find inside them: a bed, a mat, a table, a chair, a cup, a plate, a pot, a broom, a door, a window, a lamp.
Walk into Ishimwe's kitchen with me. Stand still and look around.
You see one pot on the fire. Just one. So you say:
There is a pot.
Now you look at the shelf. You see three cups. That is more than one! So you say:
There are three cups.
In Ishimwe's bedroom there is one bed and two mats. How do we write that? Let us go slowly.
Now Ishimwe can finally write to his friend:
In my bedroom there is a bed. There are two mats on the floor.
Notice the two things that always travel together. are brings the -s with it. is brings the a with it, and no s. They are like friends who always walk side by side.
Tip
Count first. Then speak
One thing: there is a ... and no s. "There is a table."
Two, three, many: there are ... and add s. "There are four chairs."
Let your ear help you. There is and a both feel small and alone. There are and the buzzing -s both feel like a crowd.
Do each one, then tap Show answer to check.
There is one door. Finish it: "There ___ a door."
Answer: is. One thing, so is.
There are two windows. Finish it: "There ___ two windows."
Answer: are. Two is more than one, so are.
You count five plates in the kitchen. Write the whole sentence.
Answer: "There are five plates." More than one, so are - and plate must grow its s and become plates.
Find the mistake: "There is three chairs in the sitting room."
Answer: Three chairs is more than one, so it must be "There are three chairs in the sitting room."
Your turn. Look around the room you are sitting in right now. Say one sentence with there is, and one sentence with there are.
Answer: Yours will be different from everybody else's! Just check one thing: in your there are sentence, did the thing end with an s?
