Religion and Living Together
Lesson 2 of 3
12 min
Let's begin
Gatete found a purse with money in it on the path to school. Nobody was watching. His heart beat fast. He could keep it, or he could find the owner.
He remembered what his grandmother always said: "A good name is worth more than money." So he took the purse to his teacher, and together they found the owner.
Gatete showed a good value. Today you will learn about the good values our families and our religions teach us.
A value is a good way of behaving that we choose because it is right. Our parents teach us values at home. Our religions teach us values too. And a good value is good for everyone, whatever religion you follow.
Here are the big ones. Read each one and think of a time you have seen it.
Values are not just words. They show up in what you do. Let's work through some real moments. This is our worked example.
See how each value is shown by an action? When you know the action, you can name the value.
Tip
Ask the little question. Before you do something, ask yourself: "Is this kind, honest and fair?"
If the answer is yes, go ahead. If the answer is no, stop and choose again. That one small question keeps your good values awake.
Name the value, then tap Show answer to check.
Uwase finds a pencil that is not hers and gives it back to the owner. Which value?
Answer: Honesty.
Gatete gives half of his bananas to a hungry classmate. Which value?

Keza's brother broke her toy and said sorry. She forgives him and does not hit back. Which value?
Answer: Forgiveness.
Habimana greets his teacher politely and listens without shouting. Which value?
Answer: Respect.
Name one good value YOU can show at school today, and how.
Answer: Many good answers! For example: kindness (help a friend carry water), honesty (tell the truth if you make a mistake), or hard work (finish your work well).
