Human Reproductive System
Lesson 3 of 6

Let's begin
Mugisha's voice has started to crack in the middle of songs at choir practice, and the other boys laugh. Umutoni has suddenly grown taller than everyone in her row, and she feels shy about it.
Both of them are wondering what is happening. The answer is a normal stage of growing up called puberty.
Puberty is the stage when a child's body starts to change into an adult's body and the reproductive organs begin to work. The changes are controlled by hormones, chemical messengers made in the body.
Puberty usually begins somewhere between about 9 and 14 years of age. Girls often start a year or two before boys. Everyone has their own timetable: starting early or starting late are both normal.
Each month, the lining of the uterus becomes thick and soft, ready in case a baby starts to grow. When there is no baby, the lining is not needed. It breaks down and flows out of the vagina as blood over about 3 to 7 days. This is the menstrual period. A girl's first period is a sign that her puberty has begun.
Periods usually come about once every 28 days, but in the first years they may not be regular. A period is not a sickness and it is not dirty. Girls can go to school, study and play as usual. Mild pain in the lower belly is common; if the pain is very bad, tell a parent, a teacher or a nurse.
During puberty, you may feel happy one minute and sad or angry the next, want more privacy, and care more about how you look. This is normal. Talk to a parent, guardian, teacher or other trusted adult about your questions. Never tease anyone about their body; everyone is going through the same journey.
Tip
Puberty is not a race
Every body has its own clock. Early or late, it is normal. Ask questions, stay clean and be kind to others who are changing too.
Try each one on your own first, then tap Show answer to check.
Name two changes that happen to both boys and girls at puberty.
Answer: Any two: growth spurt, hair under the arms and around the private parts, more sweat and body smell, pimples, stronger feelings.
Name one change that happens only in girls and one that happens only in boys.
Answer: Girls: breasts develop, hips widen or periods start. Boys: voice deepens, beard grows or shoulders broaden.
Ishimwe got her first period at 11. Her friend Mutesi is 12 and has not started yet. Is something wrong with Mutesi?
Answer: No. Puberty starts at different ages; both girls are normal.
What is a wet dream?
Answer: A normal release of semen during sleep that happens to boys during puberty.
Some boys laugh at Mugisha when his voice cracks. What should a good friend do?
Answer: Stand up for him, explain that voice changes are a normal part of puberty, and ask the others to stop teasing.
